Within Europe, Belgium has long held
an established reputation for finance and banking. It is a country
with an entrepreneurial spirit, having pioneered many of the
electronic payment systems commonly used around the world today. The
country is widely credited with making the credit/debit system the
norm.In Belgium, the
accounting field has two professional associations: The Belgian
Auditing Association (IRE) and the Belgian Institute Expert
Accountants (IEC). The IEC has the power to regulate the profession.
Membership is more than 6,000 professionals, of whom more than half
are externe (accountancy practitioners) providing external
services to companies and the rest are interne (employee
accountants) working within companies. The IRE represents the
auditing sector and has almost 1,000 members. As many as 3,000
people are employed by Belgian accounting firms.
