Excerpted from the Austria Career Guide
As Austria is a member of the
Schengen Agreement, visitors from other Schengen countries planning
to stay in Austria for fewer than 90 days do not need to apply for a
visa or entry permit. However, for all extended stays and for
individuals seeking employment or planning to study in Austria, an
entry permit or residence permit is generally required. As of
January 1, 2006, the length of the stay in Austria is the key factor
in determining the visa required so be sure to define this in
advance of applying for an entry permit. Also, if planning to work
in Austria, even on a temporary or short-term basis, make sure to
obtain, in advance, all the necessary work authorization papers and
(if not self-employed) a letter from the employer. Without proper
papers, neither a visa nor a residence permit will be issued.
Application for a long-term stay in
Austria requires planning ahead. Prepare to complete significant
amounts of documentation; plan a long lead time. The best chance for
success comes from persistence in adhering to application procedures
and following up on the application as it is processed.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Austria guide.
