   :: Cultural Advice

Excerpted from the Belgium Career Guide

Doors are sometimes closed, sometimes open; in either case, knocking before entering and offering to close the door upon exiting is polite. Women and men are still not treated as equals in business, especially in Wallonia. A woman, for example, would rarely be allowed to pick up the bill at a business meal, even if she was the one to invite everyone. People do not regularly work over weekends, holidays (particularly the Christmas/New Year’s season, Holy Week, and July and August) or vacations: these times are usually sacred. Note that Belgian workers can have up to five weeks of vacation; however, business in Belgium can still move quite quickly.

This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Belgium guide.
