Privacy and individual accomplishment of
one’s tasks is critical; however, there can be much involvement
between seniors and staff, and within and among team members.
Following procedures is all-important and is believed to be the most
effective way of accomplishing a task. Anything out of the ordinary
or unusual is usually not appreciated, and must be explained. The
ability to work easily in a team is important; sincerity and
seriousness, not necessarily friendliness, are the preferred
attributes. Public compliments and rewards are not common.
Doors are usually closed; one should knock
first before opening and close the door upon leaving. However, in
larger and more international companies open door policies are more
common. Women and men are usually treated as equals in Germany
today, although this may not be universal across all generations,
regions or industries. Depending on the company culture, staying
late at the office is not necessarily considered a good sign. It can
be interpreted as indicating that the individual is incapable of
organizing himself or herself well enough to accomplish the job in
the time permitted. People do not easily work over weekends,
holidays or vacations.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Germany guide.
