Excerpted from the Japan Career Guide
Japan has a dense population, concentrated into a small area. The national standard of living is extremely high with considerable emphasis placed on education. Visitors and job seekers to Japan should understand that the country dates back to 10,000 BC and is rich in tradition, history, arts and culture. The philosophy of Confucianism, which stresses harmony of relationships, respect for rank, authority and age, as well as loyalty to the group, is the foundation of Japanese culture. Expatriates who want to obtain employment in Japan need to have an understanding of, and respect for, this ancient culture and its people.
Japanese, the official language, is spoken by the entire population. The entire population is also literate, which is very impressive considering the complexity of the writing system. Japanese is a formal language that pays strict attention to a hierarchy in its speech patterns and word selections. The Japanese respect the attempts of expatriates to learn key words and phrases that assist them in communicating. An effort to learn, especially a successful effort, will be appreciated and rewarded with a successful job hunt.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Japan guide.
